getting down to zero

Our Trade Counter in Peterborough UK looks much like any other store – but it’s actually a green pioneer. Our first store to generate more energy than it consumes.

It’s all thanks to its solar PV panels and battery storage system that power a very energy efficient store, fitted with an air source heat pump and LED lighting.

We’re so pleased with the results, we’ve rolled out our zero energy design to four more Trade Counters.

% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions since 2016

clean and green
across our estate

We now have solar PV panels at 20 locations, as well as biomass boilers supplying two distribution centres, and air source heat pump systems at 63 sites.

And we buy a lot of green energy too – including all the electricity we use in the UK.

In 2018, 43% of the electricity we used came from zero carbon renewable electricity and on-site renewable generation. Up from 31% the year before.

Changes like this have helped us cut our greenhouse gas emissions by 15% since 2016, and by over one-third since 2010.

But we’re not stopping there.

we’re lining up
with climate science

In February 2019 we announced ambitious new targets to decarbonise our business, products and supply chains.

Our targets have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), confirming that they align with climate science.

With our new targets we will:

  • Reduce scope 1 & 2 emissions from property and transport by 22% in absolute terms by 2025, compared to 2016/17;
  • Reduce scope 3 emissions from the supply chain and customer use of products by 40% per ¬£million turnover by 2025, compared to 2017/18.
