Brico Dépôt Iberia increases equality in the workforce

Brico Dépôt Iberia has set an ambition to be recognised as an inclusive employer in the retail sector

The challenge they faced was the lack of visibility on what local stores were doing to tackle the issue of equality and diversity – stores were working on it, but there was no coordinated approach. That is why in 2016, the company began working with La Caixa Foundation to monitor their progress on improving inclusion of marginalised groups in its workforce.

The initiative began with three pilot stores in the Madrid area, working with organisations that specialise in helping disadvantaged groups access paid employment. The organisations provide training, and Brico Dépôt provides practical work experience in its stores. Once the work experience has concluded, the trainees have the opportunity to be hired into a permanent role – a win-win for the new colleague, the community, and the stores.

One year on, Brico Dépôt is on course to meet its targets, and Head of Services Sara Parra received an award from La Caixa in recognition of the social impact of the project. The programme has also impressed a delegation from the Portuguese Ministry of Equality and Diversity, which visited the store in Getafe to learn how the project works, and what the benefits are for the business and the community. They are now looking to implement similar initiatives in Portuguese companies.
