The Kingfisher story
Kingfisher today is Europe’s largest home improvement retailer and third largest in the world
Since the 1980s Kingfisher has been transformed from a UK based multi-retail sector conglomerate into an international retailer concentrated on the highly attractive home improvement sector. In 2008 a new management team and structure was introduced to better leverage our key international strengths including sourcing and innovation. The timeline below sets out some of the key milestones in our history.
1980
We operated 3 retail divisions, General Merchandise, Home Improvement and Electricals.
1990s
The Group continued to grow in the UK and commenced an international expansion programme with acquisitions in Continental Europe and organic store openings in Asia.
2000
We began to transform the business from a conglomerate of various retail sub-sectors to a single business concentrated on the highly attractive Home Improvement sector.
2003
Our transformation was complete having successfully demerged or sold all our businesses outside of home improvement.
2008
A new management team set out its vision to operate the various home improvement businesses much more as a single, unified retail group. The ‘Delivering Value’ plan was launched to drive greater value for our shareholders.
2011
In March 2011 we launched the second phase of our Delivering Value strategy with the aim of delivering faster growth and higher returns by being the world's expert at making home improvement easier.
2012
We provided more detail about the Creating the Leader plan, including announcing the eight specific steps that make up the new medium term plan, along with the associated key success measures and short term milestones.
