At Kingfisher we endeavour to create an engaging environment for colleagues in our stores, head offices and call centres, so that every employee can feel highly motivated in their jobs and actively contribute to our purpose, Better Homes, Better Lives.

The key to creating engaged teams is having the best line managers so it is our mission to ensure we have 10,000 inspiring team leaders across Kingfisher. In addition to a focus on leadership, each of our businesses has developed ways of working to create the best possible environment. Examples include an 'everyday engagement' approach at Screwfix, in which trade counter colleagues are encouraged to give feedback on how they feel throughout the working day using an anonymous 'buzzbox' voting system. Screwfix has recently been awarded the ‘2015 Gallup Great Workplace Award’. In Brico Dépôt Iberia, a winner of the ‘2014 Best Workplaces’ award, store employees meet monthly to take responsibility for finding ways to improve their store's performance, and increase their bonus as result, through the ‘Progression’ programme. In Brico Dépôt France, monthly meetings are organised in stores, in which colleagues are updated face-to-face on strategy and activities at both local and national levels. These activities are regularly shared between our businesses.

Kingfisher measures engagement once a year through the One Team Engagement Survey (in conjunction with Gallup). The survey results are another opportunity for teams to talk about how they work together and find areas for further improvement. In November 2014, over 70,000 employees across Kingfisher were invited to participate in the survey; including, for the first time, colleagues in Romania, Portugal and Germany; with 86% responding (82% in 2013). We achieved an overall rating of 4.06 out of 5 on the Gallup scale (3.95 in 2013), which is a significant improvement for an employee population of this size.

At Kingfisher we believe the link between our employee engagement and our customer engagement is clear and therefore creating an inspiring and motivating environment in which every employee can thrive is essential to meeting our customer needs and therefore to our success.
